How grill repair is priced

Grill repair bills are made of three parts: the service call, the labor, and the parts. On a mass-market grill the parts are often the smallest piece. On a high-end built-in, the parts can cost more than everything else combined.

  • Service call or diagnostic fee. Most companies charge about $90 to $125 to come out and find the problem. Some include the first hour of labor. Others waive or credit the fee if you go ahead with the repair. Ask which one before you book.
  • Labor. Grill techs usually bill about $75 to $150 an hour. A simple igniter swap might take 20 minutes. Replacing a valve manifold on a five burner built-in can take a few hours.
  • Parts. Prices range widely by brand. A universal igniter might cost a few dollars. A valve for a premium grill can cost well over $100. See repair vs. replace costs if the numbers start to climb.

Most common repairs land between $75 and $350 with labor included. Large rebuilds on built-in grills, where several burners and igniters are replaced together, can run $580 to $980.

Common grill repairs and what they cost

Igniter not sparking

This is the number one call we get. Igniter repairs usually cost $75 to $200 including labor. Before you call anyone, check the battery in the push button (if your grill has one) and look for a cracked ceramic electrode or a loose wire. Our troubleshooting guide on a grill igniter that will not spark walks through it. For part prices, see ignition part costs.

Burners rusted, cracked or lighting unevenly

Burner replacement usually runs $75 to $250 with labor. Stainless tube burners on mid-range grills are on the low end. Heavy cast brass burners on premium built-ins cost much more for the part alone. Uneven flame is often a clogged burner or a spider web in the venturi, not a dead burner, so a cleaning may fix it.

Low flame or grill not getting hot

On propane grills, a low flame is very often the regulator in safety bypass mode, or a regulator going bad. Regulator work typically costs $50 to $150. Our guide on a grill that will not get hot covers the reset steps you can try first, and the regulator and hose cost guide has part prices.

Gas valves sticking, leaking or not controlling the flame

Valve replacement usually costs about $85 to $200 in labor, plus the valve. This is not a DIY job. Valves are safety parts, they must be OEM, and the connections have to be leak tested after the work. Prices for valves alone are in our grill valve cost guide.

Rotisserie not turning

Most rotisserie repairs are a motor, a bracket or the infrared rear burner. Motor swaps are usually quick and land within a normal service call plus the part. If the rear burner will not light, that is a different job. Our guide on a rotisserie motor that stopped working helps you sort out which it is, and rotisserie parts prices are listed separately.

Smell of gas

Gas leak repairs at the grill or the connection usually cost about $150 to $350. If you smell gas strongly, shut off the gas at the tank or the supply valve, do not light anything or flip switches near the grill, and call your gas utility or 911 from a safe place. For a faint smell around the grill only, read our guide on a grill that smells like gas and do not use the grill until it is checked.

Trip fees and region notes

Many companies charge a trip fee for addresses outside their normal route, and some charge a flat trip fee that is waived if you approve the repair. In our service areas across California, Arizona and Utah, labor rates follow the cost of living. Coastal California is the highest. Phoenix and Salt Lake City are usually lower, though rural trips in any state can add travel charges. Salt air near the coast also means more rusted burners, igniter wires and valves, so coastal grills tend to need repairs sooner.

Why premium brands cost more to fix

On a Weber or other mass-market grill, parts are cheap and easy to find. On Lynx, Twin Eagles, Hestan or Alfresco, parts cost far more and fitment depends on the model and serial number. Lynx changed part numbers several times over the years, and Alfresco fitment depends on the serial number. That is why it pays to get your model and serial number before anyone orders. On most built-ins, the rating plate is on the back of the drip tray, under the control panel, or inside the cart door. Our guide to finding your grill model number shows where each brand puts it.

If you have a brand Pro Grill carries, you can shop Lynx parts at the Pro Grill store or check brand pricing in our parts cost guides.

DIY vs. calling a pro

Safe homeowner jobs: replacing an igniter battery, swapping a universal igniter, cleaning burner ports, replacing grates and heat plates, and resetting a propane regulator. Leave valves, gas lines, manifold work and anything that smells like gas to a pro.

Most service companies in our network are dealers or have dealer accounts, so they can usually get the right OEM part for your grill and install it in the same visit or a quick follow-up. Find grill repair pros near you, or if you plan to do a simple repair yourself, have Pro Grill find the part you need, including parts that are not in the online store.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to have a grill repaired?

Most grill repairs cost about $75 to $350 with labor. A service call is usually about $90 to $125, and premium brand parts can add more.

Is it worth repairing a gas grill?

On built-in and premium grills, almost always, since a new grill can cost thousands. On a cheap cart grill with a rusted firebox, replacing it often makes more sense.

How much does it cost to replace a grill igniter?

Usually about $75 to $200 with labor. The part itself is often inexpensive on mass-market grills.

Can I replace a grill gas valve myself?

We do not recommend it. Valves are safety parts that must be OEM and leak tested after install, so this is a job for a qualified grill tech.

Do grill repair companies charge a trip fee?

Many do. Expect a service call or diagnostic fee of about $90 to $125, and sometimes an added charge for addresses outside the normal service area.

How we get our pricesPrices come from current listings at authorized parts dealers, the Pro Grill parts store, manufacturer parts sites and Amazon, checked by hand. We list OEM (factory) parts and, where a decent one exists, aftermarket or universal parts. Prices change with supply and model year, so treat these as ranges and confirm the exact part for your model and serial number before you order.
