What gas fire pit parts cost in 2026

Gas fire pit parts range from a $20 bag of lava rock to more than $2,500 for a large brass burner. Most homeowners end up in one of three places: a cheap fix (new media, a cover, a battery or a cleaned burner), a mid-size repair (an igniter, a thermocouple or a valve), or a full burner kit replacement, which usually runs $400 to $2,000 depending on the size and shape of the pit.

The biggest price drivers are the burner size in BTUs, the burner material (brass and stainless cost more than aluminized steel), and the ignition type.

Burners and burner pans

The burner is the ring, H, tree or linear pipe that the flame comes out of. The pan is the tray it sits in, which holds the media and drains water.

Warming Trends Crossfire brass burners are one of the most common premium burners in custom pits. List prices start around $300 to $340 for small 60K to 84K BTU burners and climb to $520 to $1,080 for mid-size units. Big 300K BTU and up burners run $1,250 to $2,250. Octagonal Crossfire burners list for about $810 to $1,910, and tree style burners for long or square pits run about $560 to $2,640. Natural gas and propane versions cost the same. Brass does not rust out the way steel does, which is why many of these burners outlast the pit around them.

HPC (Hearth Products Controls) sells complete burner kits with the pan, burner, valve and flex line together. A match-lit kit with a round flat pan runs about $405 to $1,090 depending on size. Square flat pan kits run about $535 to $900, round drop-in bowl kits about $750 to $1,115, and long torpedo or H-burner kits for linear pits about $980 to $1,980.

If your burner is rusted through or the pan has holes, replacing the whole kit is often easier than chasing individual pieces. If the burner is brass and in good shape, it can usually be reused with a new ignition system.

Ignition systems

There are three basic setups, and they are priced very differently.

  • Match-lit. You open a key valve and light it with a long lighter. This is the simplest and cheapest system and is built into the kit prices above. There is no flame safety. If the flame blows out, gas keeps flowing until someone closes the valve.
  • Push button spark with flame sensing. A spark igniter lights a pilot or the burner, and a thermocouple or flame sensor proves the flame. If the flame goes out, the valve closes. HPC's push button flame sensing system is a common example, and The Outdoor Plus sells its own version. The thermocouple is a wear part, and a failing one is the most common reason a pit lights and then shuts off after a few seconds.
  • Electronic ignition. A 120V or 12V control module, a hot surface or spark igniter and a flame sensor, usually with a wall switch, remote or home automation hookup. Electronic ignition kits run about $400 to $2,000.

Upgrading a match-lit pit to flame sensing or electronic ignition is a common job. The kit has to match the burner's BTU rating and gas type, and the pit needs room under the pan for the control box and some way to keep it dry.

Wind guards, covers and timers

A glass or stainless wind guard sits around the burner and keeps breezes from blowing the flame out, which matters more on flame-sensing systems that shut off when the flame wavers. They are sized to the burner pan.

Basic fire pit covers cost about $25 to $50. Fitted metal or stone-look lids for built-in pits cost more. A cover keeps rain out of the pan, which is the main reason igniters and thermocouples corrode.

An HPC one hour dial timer with emergency shutoff runs about $200. It is a cheap safety upgrade for match-lit pits, since the gas closes on its own when the timer runs out.

Fire glass and lava rock

Fire glass runs about $20 to $40 per 10 pound bag. Lava rock runs about $20 to $50 per bag, depending on the bag size. Most pits use lava rock as a base layer with glass on top. Only use tempered fire glass made for fire features. Regular landscape glass can crack and pop.

Media matters more than people think. Too much glass over the burner chokes the flame and turns it yellow and sooty. Glass packed into the burner ports causes low or uneven flames. If your flame has gotten smaller over the years, pull the media and clean the burner before buying parts.

Brands and what to expect

  • Warming Trends burners are sold on their own and fit into many custom pits. Replacement is usually burner for burner by BTU and footprint.
  • HPC sells complete kits and individual parts like igniters, thermocouples and ignition modules.
  • American Fyre Designs fire pits and tables use parts made for each model. Have the model number ready and order through a dealer.
  • The Outdoor Plus makes burners, pans and ignition systems, including flame sensing and electronic options, and many of their parts are specific to the system type.
  • Firegear burner systems are also common in outdoor kitchens and patio builds.

Find the model, gas type and BTU rating first

Before ordering, find the rating label. On kits it is usually on the pan, the valve or the ignition box under the pan, sometimes inside an access door on the pit. Write down the brand, model, gas type (natural gas or propane) and BTU rating. Measure the burner and the pan. Natural gas and propane burners use different orifices and are not interchangeable without a conversion.

Buy OEM parts for valves, thermocouples, flame sensors and ignition modules. These control gas flow and flame safety, and mixed parts from different systems are a common cause of nuisance shutoffs.

DIY vs hiring a pro

Replacing media, a cover, a battery or a wind guard is easy homeowner work. Anything that opens a gas connection, including burners, valves, thermocouples and ignition kits, should be done by a qualified tech who can leak test the fittings, check gas pressure and set the flame. A tech will also clean the orifice and burner ports, which fixes a lot of low flame problems without parts.

Labor depends on access. Some pits have a service door under the pan. Others need the media and pan pulled from the top, and some built-in pits were never given an access panel at all.

How Pro Grill and our network can help

Many fire pit companies in our network are dealers or hold dealer accounts. They can usually identify the burner and ignition system, order the right parts and install them on the same visit or the next one. Find a fire pit repair pro or search pros by ZIP code. If the pit just needs to be cleaned out and relit, look at fire pit cleaning services.

If you already know what you need, or the pit is older and parts are hard to track down, send Pro Grill a parts request. Pro Grill can source fire pit parts that are not listed in its online store.

For indoor and outdoor gas fireplaces, see the gas fireplace parts price guide. For the outdoor kitchen next to the pit, the repair or replace guide for grills covers when a worn grill is worth fixing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a replacement fire pit burner cost?

A brass Warming Trends burner lists for about $300 to $2,600 depending on BTU size and shape. A complete HPC match-lit kit with the pan runs about $405 to $1,980.

How much does it cost to add electronic ignition to a fire pit?

Electronic ignition kits cost about $400 to $2,000 for parts. Installation is extra and depends on access under the pan and whether power needs to be run to the pit.

Why does my fire pit light and then shut off?

On flame sensing systems, the usual cause is a dirty or failing thermocouple or flame sensor, or wind blowing the flame off the sensor. Cleaning or replacing the sensor and adding a wind guard fixes most of these.

How much fire glass do I need and what does it cost?

It depends on the pan size and depth. Fire glass costs about $20 to $40 per 10 pound bag, and most pits use lava rock underneath to cut down on how much glass you need.

Can I swap a natural gas burner to propane?

Not by just hooking up a tank. Propane runs at a different pressure and needs different orifices, and many propane setups need an air mixer. Use the manufacturer's conversion parts and have a tech set it up.

How we get our pricesPrices come from current listings at authorized parts dealers, the Pro Grill parts store, manufacturer parts sites and Amazon, checked by hand. We list OEM (factory) parts and, where a decent one exists, aftermarket or universal parts. Prices change with supply and model year, so treat these as ranges and confirm the exact part for your model and serial number before you order.
