BBQ Grill Cleaning & Repair: Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about professional BBQ grill cleaning, repair, and maintenance — answered by the grill experts at Pro Grill.
How often should I have my BBQ grill professionally cleaned?
For most homeowners who grill regularly, once or twice a year is the recommended minimum. Grills used frequently — multiple times per week or for regular entertaining — benefit from twice-annual service. If your grill has not been professionally cleaned in over a year, it is overdue. Learn more about Pro Grill's professional BBQ cleaning service and what a full clean covers.
What does a professional BBQ grill cleaning include?
A professional deep clean covers every internal component — not just the cooking grates. At Pro Grill, we fully disassemble the grill to clean burners, heat plates, briquette trays, firebox walls, drip trays, and exterior surfaces. We also inspect each component for wear and replace anything that needs attention. It is fundamentally different from a homeowner wire-brush session. See our full grill cleaning overview and the before and after gallery to see the results firsthand.
Can't I just burn off the grease instead of having it cleaned?
No — and this is one of the most common grill misconceptions. Turning the grill to high burns some surface residue off the grates but does nothing to the grease accumulated inside the firebox, on heat plates, or in the drip system. It also carbonizes existing deposits, making them progressively harder to remove. Heavy grease buildup is the primary cause of dangerous flare-ups — burning it does not prevent this, it contributes to it. Read more about BBQ fire safety.
Is professional BBQ cleaning safe around children and pets?
Yes. Pro Grill uses non-toxic, biodegradable degreasers and cleaning agents throughout every service — because your grill is a food preparation surface and the products used to clean it should be appropriate for that. No harsh chemical residue is left on food-contact surfaces, and there are no fumes that linger in covered patio spaces. Our approach is safe for families with children, pets, and animals on larger outdoor properties.
Do you clean Traeger pellet grills and smokers?
Yes. Traeger and pellet grill cleaning involves different components than a gas grill — the auger, firepot, heat deflector, drip tray, and temperature components all require specific attention during service. Pro Grill's technicians are experienced with pellet grill cleaning and maintenance. See our dedicated Traeger repair and service page for full details.
My grill won't ignite — what is the most likely cause?
The most common causes of ignition failure are blocked burner ports (grease or spider webs preventing gas from reaching the electrode), a dead or corroded battery in electronic ignition systems, a worn electrode, or a failed ignition module. Importantly, many ignition failures are actually burner blockage issues rather than igniter component failures — which is why accurate diagnosis before replacing parts matters. Pro Grill diagnoses the specific fault on-site during every BBQ repair visit.
Is it worth repairing a BBQ grill or should I replace it?
In most cases, repair is the more practical and cost-effective choice — particularly for built-in outdoor kitchen grills where replacement involves significant surrounding work. Even heavily used freestanding grills with failed components can typically be restored to reliable performance at a fraction of replacement cost. Pro Grill provides an honest assessment of what repair involves and what it costs before recommending any direction. See our grill replacement page for situations where a new grill makes more sense, and our repair service for everything else.
My grill has uneven heat — one side is much hotter than the other. Why?
Uneven heat is almost always caused by blocked burner ports on the cooler side (grease or spider webs preventing even gas distribution), a failing burner with physical deterioration, or worn heat plates and briquette trays that are no longer distributing heat evenly. Pro Grill diagnoses the specific cause on-site during a repair visit or combined grill inspection before recommending any component repair or replacement.
My grill smells like gas — what should I do?
Turn off all burner knobs and close the gas supply at the tank immediately. Do not attempt to light the grill. A gas smell when a burner is in the off position, or any persistent gas smell during or after cooking, is not normal and indicates a potential valve seal issue, gas line connection problem, or regulator fault. Do not use the grill until it has been professionally inspected. Contact Pro Grill to schedule a BBQ grill inspection before further use.
Do you repair all grill brands?
Yes. Pro Grill services all major gas grill brands available in Southern California, Arizona, and Utah — including Lynx, Fire Magic, DCS, Viking, Napoleon, Weber, Lion BBQ, Blaze, Summerset, Bull, Twin Eagles, Alfresco, AOG, Char-Broil, Turbo, and many others, including older and discontinued models. View our full BBQ brands page for a complete list, or contact us if you do not see your specific brand.
How much does professional BBQ grill cleaning cost?
Pricing depends on the size of your grill and the scope of service required. A standard freestanding grill costs less than a large built-in outdoor kitchen with multiple burners and side components. Pro Grill provides clear, upfront pricing before scheduling — no surprises on arrival. Check our current offers and promotions for seasonal discounts, and ask about our financing options for larger service packages.
Do you come to my home or do I need to bring the grill to you?
We come to you — always. Pro Grill is a fully mobile BBQ service operation. Our insured technicians arrive at your home fully equipped with all tools, cleaning supplies, and commonly needed parts. All service is performed on-site at your property. There are no drop-offs, no facility appointments, and no need to move your grill. This applies to freestanding grills and built-in outdoor kitchen configurations alike.
Do you service HOA communities and commercial properties?
Yes. Pro Grill works with HOA boards, property managers, and community associations to provide professional cleaning and recurring maintenance for shared outdoor cooking areas, amenity spaces, and community grills. We can establish recurring service schedules that keep shared facilities clean and safe year-round. See our dedicated HOA and community BBQ service page for details on community service arrangements.
I found mold or rodent droppings in my grill — is it safe to use?
No — not until it has been properly cleaned and inspected. Mold spores aerosolize when heated rather than being destroyed, and rodent droppings can carry pathogens. Do not attempt to burn off either — the correct response is professional cleaning that removes contamination from all internal components before the grill is used again. Rodent nesting material inside burner tubes is also a direct safety hazard during ignition. Contact Pro Grill for a cleaning and inspection before your next cookout. Our technicians handle these situations regularly and safely.
Can Pro Grill help me buy a new grill if mine is beyond repair?
Yes. Pro Grill is an authorized dealer for a number of major BBQ brands and sells new grills with a price match guarantee on all internet pricing. We offer a free in-home measurement visit, a free installation estimate, free haul-away of your old grill, and your first professional cleaning is included with every new grill purchase. See our grill replacement and sales page for what is currently in stock, and check our current offers for active promotions — savings of up to $1,000 are available.
